Mercenaries 2 - World in Flames - PS3 Review Back

Mercenaries 2 - World in Flames - PS3 Review

Mercenaries 2 - World in Flames - PS3 ReviewThe explosive Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is out on PC, PS3, PS2 & Xbox 360 from September 5, 2008 - but we got our hands on it on September 4 for a quick play. Well, it was supposed to be quick but ended up becoming a 10 hour gaming session! The open-world action game is set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world.

The scene is set when a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply he sparks an invasion that turns the country into a warzone. That's where you come in. You are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. Mercenaries 2 features a plethora of potential clients, all willing to pay you to do their dirty work. It's a little bit like GTA IV, but some of us think it's better. You've got deep pockets, deep grudges, and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. Who needs the Americans or the Russians when you're stocked to the brim. Lock, Stock, the whole f**king lot. This is the kind of environment 18+ games love to play in.

You better tell your girlfriend she won't be seeing you for a while, as you'll feel like Arnie in Terminator 2.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

The game is utterly brilliant. From the moment you start, the terrain is explorable and the plot far from the usual. Like GTA, you get everything from shiny new sports cars, to the future-tech satellite-guided bunker-busting mini-nuke. Tanks, APCs, boats, luxury automobiles – you name it, you can have it delivered to you in real time. And if you run out of cash you can always 'acquire' the gear you need in the field.

If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it. Play your own way, or play with the help of a friend in the new co-op multiplayer mode.

You are not a soldier. You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfill the terms of the contract, no matter what. Not everyone in the world of Mercenaries is as honorable. Everyone will try and screw you, given the chance. The whole seedy side of the game makes it more fulfilling than something like GTA but the excitement levels will get your heart pumping. The graphics are superb, and the 7.1 sound will blow your eardrums out. Some of the brand new features making it into number 2 are:

  • Work for the Highest Bidder – You decide which factions to work for and when. From one-off pick-up jobs to complex multi-objective missions your choices will decide how the game progresses and which faction wins the war.
  • New Toys – Over 130 vehicles from civilian cars to tanks and choppers plus all the destructive weaponry you can handle from pistols to rocket launchers.
  • Next Gen Destruction – Take down any building in the world piece by piece and see them crumble with fantastic effects. Not just cool to look at, destruction can be used to take out enemy forces and change the landscape of the battlefield.
  • Build Your Own Private Military Company – Recruit other mercenaries to build out your arsenal and options until you have the ultimate array of options to play with.
  • Playable Water – Fly over it, swim through it, race across it in boats. No longer just something to look at, water is an active part of the game.
  • Landing Zones – Don’t have time to make your way across the country? Go to one of your captured drop zones and instantly get transported to the next hot spot and right back into the action.
We really can't recommend this game enough - so much so, that we're off to play it again. This gets a 4 and a half thumbs out of 5.
