Pro Evolution Soccer PES 2009 PS3 review

Pro Evolution Soccer PES 2009 PS3 reviewPro Evolution Soccer 2008 was dismissed by critics and fans alike; acknowledged as being inferior to FIFA 08. However, PES 2009 may just have resurrected the Pro Evo series to champion of the football genre with a much needed modified user interface and finally, an authorised tournament in the guise of the UEFA Champions League.

On loading Pro Evo Soccer 2009, it's obvious that alot has changed. The user menu is very different, looking quite graffiti-esque. Whether it suits the game, we're not sure. It's a mix of retro and trying too hard to be stylish - perhaps it's more of a FIFA Street look, when we were expecting something more refined. However, the menu means nothing. The gameplay, that is what we really want to know about!

PES 2009 - Gameplay

PES 2009 has a variety of new options, including BE A LEGEND where you focus on one player in particular (similar to FIFA 09's Be A Pro option and progess from rookie to pro. However, the most significant advance to the gameplay is the UEFA Champions League option. In this, you can choose to play as any team (including Hull!) in the Champions League. The music, the sponsors, it's all there. However, as always with the PES series, the name's of the teams and some of the player names aren't. Thats the only drawback we could muster from this option. The Champions League mode is quite daunting for even the PES professional in 'Regular Mode', so it's more than challenging in 'Advanced Mode'.

The actual graphics and gameplay is brilliant. Similar to FIFA 09, the graphics are faultless - and they've even improved the game so the pitch doesn't slow down to a snail's pace when there are more than 10 players in the box. The passing is realistic, the running effortless; but there is one glitch - the crowd chanting can get on your nerves, and playing the game during 'Night' can leave you squinting like a blind man (who's self-pleased himself too much).

Pro Evolultion 2009 has truly regained the crown of King of the Soccer Games - it's just easier to get hold of initially, better to play and more satisfying when you score. Sadly, the only official Premier League teams are Liverpool and Manchester United, so London FC fans can't play as Chelsea. The Master League is much improved too - a players' loyalty and mood now affects their performance on the pitch. The enhancements could go on forever, the game is truly sublime.

What's more, it actually feels as though you may be able to score from a free-kick and player polygons truly reflect what you'd think their ability levels are. Oh, and we haven't mentioned the online network either, but we thought it's best to leave you something to find out for yourself.

In a sentence: you NEED this game, along with Guitar Hero 4. We give it 4.8/5. Buy it here.
