21 Bluray review
21, released on September 8, 2008 on DVD, Blu-ray and UMD is a film based on Ben Mezrich’s New York Times bestseller Bringing Down the House: The True Story of six M.I.T. Kids Who Took Vegas for Millions.
21 begins with genius student Ben Campbell (Sturgess) who is a little shy, and not really a lady’s man – but joins a crew of semi-genii playing cards and swindling the casinos for millions.
Ben’s character was based on real life genius Jeff Ma, who is Campbell’s real life equivalent. Led by professor Micky Rosa (Spacey), the crew who consist of the standard Chinese genius, girl genius, Chinese girl genius and random chauvinistic pig travel to Vegas each weekend to take on the casinos at Blackjack with their knowledge of beating the odds. And, having figured out a brilliant messaging system that would put MSN to shame, the money rolls in.
The team essentially know how to count cards, which is based on the age old Game show problem.
The game show problem
The game show problem is this: imagine you were on Play Your Cards Right or some other game show and you're given the choice of three doors. Behind one door is a dream car/holiday/prize of your choice, and behind the other two doors are goats. You go on to pick a door, say door #1. One you pick the door, the host, probably Bob Monkhouse, (who knows what's behind the doors), opens another door, say door #3, which has a goat. Bob then says, "Do you want to pick door #2?" The game show problem essentially elaborates on this problem – which essentially is this: always switch! Why should you switch? It’s variable probability! The first door has a 1 in 3 chance of being the right one, whereas the second has a 2 in 3 chance as you now know 1 of the 3 doors has a goat in it for definitely. Hence; making the probability for the door you didn’t choose 2/3.
It may not make sense at first, but try it!

21 comes with a host of exciting extra features on both Blu-ray and DVD including featurettes and a filmmaker’s commentary. The Blu-ray release also includes 21 Virtual Blackjack and a Virtual Blackjack Tutorial Video for all budding Blackjack players!.21 is definitely worth a watch – and it’s even better if you like Maths!
