21 Jump Street Blu-ray Review

21 Jump Street is a film that certainly will not leave you without laughing. The film is a remake of the late 80’s TV series with the same name; usually these remakes often do not work.

In the case of 21 Jump Street the tale of a pair of mismatched cops that are forced to return to high school in order to bring a drug ring to justice. The film opens with a flashback of Schmidt as the awkward, bleach-blonde loser with braces and Jenko being the popular jock. Schmidt in high school wasn't able to get anywhere with the girls while Jenko wasn't getting anywhere with his grades. After this the next time we see the pair together is at the police academy which soon leads to Schmidt and Jenko striking up a friendship as Jenko helps Schmidt get fit while Schmidt helps Jenko pass his exams.

The rather interesting twist, that arguably makes the film that ever bit more interesting, is that the cops soon find out that the social terrain is vastly different to what it use to be like during their days at high school.

The duo’s return to high school and the inversion of their roles gives the movie focus. Schmidt is now the cool kid and Jenko is well hanging out in the science club and in all honesty the pair are supported by various other actors such as the drugged up coach, the science teacher who has the hots for Jenko and the principle of the school.

Without trying to give too much away, 21 Jump Street is full of well-executed moments. The best part is that they never overstay their welcome while also keeping the plot moving.

What about video quality? Well the blu-ray transfer appears rather dim and the image is rarely vibrant. There is an overall slight drain throughout on the film. The darker scenes are better but do not amaze.

The audio quality, you would be glad to hear, is far better. Music plays with crystal clear clarity and covers everything from the highs to the lows. The surround sound support is evident and shapely, pleasantly immersive and more energizer when needed.

When it comes to extras, the film is jam-packed with the following:

• Audio Commentary: Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are joined by Actors Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. They deliver a lively commentary where everyone speaks simultaneously, resulting in occasional substance competing with -- and sometimes lost under -- an avalanche of laughter and jabber. Fans of the film and the participants will enjoy the chatter, but those looking for one-hundred-percent hard commentary will want to skip.

• Brothers in Arms (1080p, 6:24): A closer look at the Channing Tatum-Jonah Hill tandem.
• Johnny Depp on Set (1080p, 4:42): Cast and crew discuss the Depp cameo.
• The Rob Riggle Show (1080p, 9:24): Cast and crew heap the praise on the 21 Jump Street actor, complete with behind-the-scenes footage and clips from the film.
• Peter Pan on the Freeway (1080p, 4:12): A random collection of footage from the making of the freeway chase scene.

Overall, the film is a hilarious comedy remake that will keep everyone happy.
