n 1991, a small American town mourns the passing of Chuck Harris; father, husband and Second World War veteran. His widow, Ethel (Shirley MacLaine), refuses to mourn, drowning herself in alcohol and cigarettes as she neglects her hysterical daughter, Marie (Neve Campbell).
