Mrs Merton and Malcolm DVD review

Mrs Merton and Malcolm DVD reviewMrs Merton and Malcolm, the spin off from the successful and well-loved Mrs Merton Show sees Caroline Ahearne entertain viewers with her wit and endless talent in the creation and performance of dark comedy series. Mrs Merton (Ahearne) plays doting, loyal mother to Malcolm, a 37 year old who appears to have the mental age of a pre-teen, but the physical attributes of a middle-aged man.

Mrs Merton and Malcolm

Included in this DVD box set is the bedridden Mr. Merton who is never seen or heard. It is one of the main characterisations of the show that Mrs. Merton carries out a one-sided conversation with him after tucking Malcolm into bed each night.

Truly a sitcom with a twist, this highly amusing and utterly dark comedy divided critics on first release in 1999, even with cameos from stars such as Brian Murphy (George and Mildred, Man About the House) as a close family friend and Steve Coogan as an up and coming radio disc jockey.

Released on November 10, 2008 the DVD contains all 6 episodes from the series, which are:

  • One: It’s Malcolm’s 37th birthday. The potted beef sandwiches are prepared and it’s time for the guests to arrive…
  • Two: Malcolm rises to the challenge of a game of tiddly-winks with next door neighbour Justin
  • Three: Malcolm finds love at the chemist’s. But does shop assistant Judith Potts feel the same way about him?
  • Four: Malcolm is poorly. He doesn’t want to bother the doctor, but Mrs. Merton is insistent…
  • Five: Has Mrs. Merton Found the perfect partner for Arthur Capstick?
  • Six: As Mrs Merton Struggles to cope with the loss of her bedridden husband, Malcolm must adjust to his new role as man of the house
Even though it was released nearly 10 years ago, fans of Ahearne will welcome it's timely release. We give it 3.5 out of 5.
