Outpost horror DVD review
Outpost review - you can't kill what's already dead. You can kill a genre though, miserably.
Outpost is set in war-torn Eastern Europe where a band of battle-worn mercenaries undertake a dangerous mission into a no-man's land at the request of a mysterious businessman. Fans of films like Deathwatch will love the apt storyline and the gritty atmosphere set in the film. You can't help but imagine Georgia was the location they used for the filming of this movie.
The militia group locate and secure a disused military bunker, but "disover a terrifying secret". It sounds unoriginal, but it is actually much better to watch than it sounds. The group find that Nazis have been conducting some pretty horrible experiments on soldiers, that have gone untouched for 50-odd years. Sadly though, the relatively low budget means that you're probably better off watching Zombie Strippers starring Jenna Jameson - they both have similar gore - i.e. not much. The film also takes a while to get going, but once it does, it's relatively interesting.
The Outpost score is brilliant, and touching, but you can't help but feel it is a little out of place in the Nazi bunkers. It promised a Nazi version of Dog Soldiers, however sadly it didn't quite live up to the expectation. You'd be better off watching the 28 Days/Weeks Later boxset for the same money, as quite sadly, it's a rent-only DVD option. Nuts may love it, but they probably like polishing turds, too.
2 out of 5 stars. Outpost is out now.
