Scarface DVD review
Scarface. You have the poster on your wall and you know most of the lines, without seeing it. The 3 DVD boxset is released this month with never-seen before extras, but probably not worth the extra money should you have seen it before. Globally considered one of the best gangster films ever made alongside The Godfather, Al Pacino puts in the performance of a lifetime as the ruthless Cuban immigrant Tony Montana out to conquer the world.
The film is infact based on Howard Hawks's 1932 version, updated by Howard Hawks's 1932 classic who relocates the films events to Florida which follows Montana rise from Cuban 'fugee to multi-millionaire cocaine smuggler. This is considered Pacino's best perfomance ever, helped by Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife, Steven Bauer as his partner in crime and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as his sister. Plenty of four-letter words and stunning remarks will leave the watcher right at the edge of his/her seat. Oliver Stone's apt script and inch-perfect cinematography courtesy of John Alonzo make this a true shocker.
Scarface criticisms
The only criticisms levied at Scarface has been that it gets a little tiresome about two-thirds the way through. Also, many have cited that the final massacre scene is a little blood-heavy and more of a horror-porn John Carpenter scene than an Oliver Stone scene. However, even so, it's a film that you must see before you die. A visually-stunning film, and we give it 4.6/5.
