Imperial College will cease to be part of the University of London from the next acadmemic year.
On Friday 14th July, the Imperial College Council agreed that Imperial will leave the University. Imperial will continue to be part of the University of London for the 2006 and 2007 academic year, so no changes will be in effect the next academic year.
Students will be able to choose this year, whether they will eventually gain a degree from Imperial College, London, or from the University of London.
Imperial has been under strong pressure, if not from its students also, to leave the highly regarded University of London, which also comprises colleges like Birkbeck and Goldsmiths. The reason for this, students proclaim, is that the reputation of Imperial is tarnished through the association with such colleges.
However, after speculation about a super-university being opened in conjunction with UCL in 2003, many students believed Imperial to be remaining part of the University of London.
For many students, this came as a suprise. However for Council members it did not.
Imperial College, London is ranked joint second in the Times Education University Guide, and is the leading University in Europe for courses such as Computing.
