Student university admissions in redesign

Fri, 28 Jul 2006
A newly designed system from the Government in order to measure students' progress in sixth forms and colleges in England would award students points for failing their A levels. In this newly proposed system, students with decent previously recorded exam results would gain more points for failing than those students who were less able.

Schools, sixth forms and college leaders have said that the idea was unacceptable, with Government ministers also asking for a new approach to failing A Levels.

A different measure must be tried according to leaders, ignoring students who fail exams altogether. Not the student themselves, but the exams they fail.

Due to the change, the implementation of the new system has been set back to September 2007. This system will also be used by Ofsted when making decisions on how well schools, sixth forms and colleges are doing.
