More and more students are beginning to own expensive personal electronical items, including MP3 players such as iPods and Creative Zens, computers, laptops, widescreen televisions and expensive mobile phones a survey suggests.
A survey by Direct Line, the home insurance company has proven that the average value of a students possessions has risen by half over the last 10 years.
Ten years ago, the average student had possessions worth 1900 GBP. However, now, students have goods worth over 2900 GBP. This survey was conducted on 587 students across the UK.
These results have come at a time where students starting university courses this September or October will pay amounts up to GBP 3000 a year for tuition fees, and where students complain of debts in excess of GBP 10000 when leaving university and finding a job.
Under two-thirds of students surveyed by YouGov were cited as owning laptops, computers, with half owning MP3 players, just under half owning DVD players, and 6% even owning PDAs.
Students with luxury goods moved to the clothes wardrobe too. Students spend in excess of 40% more a year on clothing and accessories, rather than on books and essential household appliances.
No change there then.
