Reading University physics department kept open by students

Mon, 20 Nov 2006
There has been enormous pressure on the UKs Reading University to maintain its physics department by keeping it open before an official decision which will be given today.

The Reading university council have previously said that they did not have enough funds to support the department, which costs in the region on £10m a year.

However earlier this month, the Higher Education Funding Council for England did say that UK universities will receive £75 million over the next three years to boost science at universities.

The Institute of Physics has pleaded with the university to change its position and keep the department open.

As it stands the government is desperate to get more students into science, especially physics and chemistry.

The Institute of Physics had said this past Friday for Reading university to keep its physics department open in the light of the new funding.

Students have been shying away from subjects such as physics, as they did not pay as well as subjects such as Law, Medicine and Computer Science when it comes to paying off student debt. In particular, top up fees have been criticised in leading students to shy away from subjects heavily leading into research.
