Overseas students in UK universities shoots up

Tue, 27 Mar 2007
In a report from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, it is stated that the number of overseas students studying university courses at UK universities has risen to 330,000 students. This is equal to every one in seven students being of foreign nationality.

The increase in overseas students is phenomenal. An increase of 3.7 percent has been caused by students coming to the UK from India. The increase of Indian students is 15 percent greater than last year.

However, Chinese students are still those with the highest proportion in the UK. Over 51,000 students are resident at UK universities. This is actually a decrease from last year.

For all UK universitie, overseas students are a huge source of money. They pay greater rates to be at university in the UK. Many are from wealthy backgrounds, so things like debt are not an issue. Furthermore, they contribute around 10bn GBP each year to the UK economy.

The figures which were released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency for the 2005 to 2006 academic year show the perpetual increase of foreign students from Europe, Asia and Africa is on the rise.
