Students studying at university in the UK are (shockingly) far less likely to visit a library than their fellow students did just 10 years ago.
The Society of College, National and University Libraries has reported a 22% decrease in student library visits since 1997. The university libraries’ association believes that this is part due to the increase in online resources.
Each year, student visits to the library have decreased by roughly 3%. According to The Society of College, National and University Libraries, UK students withdraw an average of 56 books per year, 1 less than the 57 withdrawn on average by students last year.
Surprisingly however, universities are spending over half a billion (£500m) each year on their university libraries, with the average spending per student shooting up to £332. Oxford University was the biggest spender, with £28m spent on it’s libraries.
