According to a poll from Association of Graduate Recruiters, of the 217 large firms in the UK graduate applicant places for jobs with these firms will be 16.4% higher than 2006. This will come to the relief of many students, who still have a monumentous student debt, including many students who have several loans and jobs to pay their way through university.
However, this does not necessarily equate to more jobs for graduates fresh out of university. The big firms are seeing more applicants from overseas, particulary America, India and China, with many citing that those born after 82 are increasingly choosy.
According to study by Trendence research institute: "A quarter of employers praised "the strong work ethic of overseas graduates". Many believe that both employers and graduates will have to shift their expectations to fill the jobs becoming available to graduates.
Even though there are increases in vacancy numbers, the starting wage is no longer climbing. 2007 saw a rise of just 2.1% to an average of £24,000 for graduates fresh from university.
