Foreign students in the UK - not only do they pay more than British born students, there are more foreign students now applying to UK universities year on year. Foreign students are considered those not from the United Kingdom.
Many students come from China, India, America and Europe. The UK has four universities considered to be amongst the top ten in the world, according to THES.
The total number of foreign students enrolling at British universities rose by more than 5% last year. This is a sharp contrast to the applications and enrollment from UK students, which remained constant.
Many academics and politicians believe that top-up fees have caused UK entries to remain constant. The total number of students enrolling at university in the UK rose by 1% from 2005-6 to 2006-7.
There was a 2% fall in first year undergraduate UK residents, and rises of 5% and 12% among EU and non-EU first year students respectively.
Many politicians and authorities believe the fear of debt and having to repay the student loan is deterring many students, perhaps failing to consider careers or jobs after university.
