According to university admissions service UCAS, there was just under a 10% rise in undergraduates starting full-time education at UK universities or colleges this year.
A total of 582,657 potential university students applied for a university please with 13,000 of these opting for nursing and midwifery who would have formerly applied through NMAS.
The year on year increase was reported at 6.3%. As usual, there are more undergraduate females than males. For every 4 males, there are 5 females studying at university. There are 249,294 female students in the UK studying for undergraduate degrees compared to 202,577 males.
Although there was concern that tuition fees, top-up fees and fears of a recession may act to persuade more 18 year olds to go straight into employment, it appears not to have happened.
Student debt is still a major cause for concern however, with 1 in 3 students having more than one student bank account.
