Oxford university has denied reports that it intended to increase tuition fees up to £11,000 per academic year. An official Oxford university statement declared that this was not "Oxford's position" and that they did not seek an increase in tuition fees.
The reports created an uproar amongst students in the UK. Many students feel that the level of debt accrued during university is increasing - especially with the current tough economic climate. Students have been reported to emerge out of university with debts in excess of £25,000 through loans, accommodation costs, fees and living expenses.
However, Dr Hood, vice-chancellor of Oxford university reported to MPs last month informing them of a shortfall of £8,000 per undergraduate student at Oxford.
The subject of tuition fees is highly debated, with top up fees being introduced in 2006 and some universities looking to review the maximum limit set upon them.
