Students can now declare themselves as being at one of the world's top research universities - if they go to Imperial, Cambridge or Oxford, that is.
The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) panels, comprising of 67 international members from research groups and companies has said that 54% of the work assessed in 159 universities was either world leading or internationally excellent. A further 33% was classed as internationally recognised.
The results from the RAE help decide universities' funding shares, from a pot of £1.5bn. This will come as a relief to many universities that lost millions in the Icelandic banking collapse - prompting claims of debt and deficit in many UK universities.
Cambridge University had 71% of its academic submissions rated 4* and 3*, whilst Oxford had 70% rated 4* and 3*. Imperial College London had 73% in the top two grades - with fewer submissions rated 4*.
The UK has four universities judged to be in the world's top 10.
