The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has announced that there should be an extra allocation of funded university places as an avenue out of recession and ultimately, unemployment.
Each year, thousands of prospective students fail to gain a university place. According to the report author, Andreas Schleicher, the 'benefits clearly outweigh the costs'.
Although university expenses are costly, the report states that there is evidence that higher education is cost effective. This year, there was a surge in university applications due to the strained job market and economic climate.
Reportedly, Schliecher stated that 'relative competition for jobs is growing', which people are becoming aware of.
The proportion of students heading to university has doubled since the mid 1990s.
