How to spot a bad accommodation deal (continued)

Student insuranceConditions: When you take a look at the house checkout all the rooms of the house. Check for damp and mould and also structural integrity of the walls and floors.

You never know but you could be in a house that is unfit for living in. If there is any of these things ask if these are getting repaired before you sign anything.

Facilities: The more facilities the better so check what is on offer for that certain house. Check for things like a working shower and bath, ovens, television, microwave, iron, telephone. I know that you take these things for granted but you really should check before you decide. Double glazing is a nice plus because it keeps you warm in winter, saves on bills and keeps out a lot of noise from those drunk students walking home late at night.

Bills and Extra Costs: Another key aspect of good housing for students is the bills. Ask what your rent pays for and when the bills will come trough the door. Ask what the normal amount will be per month for your bills. Be careful of other charges such as council tax (Students don't have to pay) and the television license. If you don't watch television or have a television refuse to pay it because its not fair.

Where do I sign...? Well if the house your looking at satisfies all or most of criteria then I suggest you sign up for the house but read your contract carefully. Many landlords require you to pay for 40 weeks rent per year when you only spend 30 weeks in your house/flat/room. So be alert, and you'll be coming out with a nice little pad!
