Student contents insurance - do I need it?
Student room insurance is a necessity whilst at university or in higher education – especially for new students, latest research suggests.
According to the research, 1 in 3 students in the UK has been a target of crime in the last year. Over 12% of the students interviewed were the victim of theft or attempted theft with 10% the victims of burglary.
Just seven higher education institutions in the East Midlands were used for the survey, conducted on behalf on the government.
The most alarming fact to emerge was that over 60% of students did not report their burglaries to the police.
Sarah Parker, a student of Aston university described that as a student, she felt that the burden of another insurance bill, even to protect her possessions was simply too much.
However, NUS endorsed student insurance providers Endsleigh have come up with a solution – offering room and contents insurance for as little as £16 a year.
With freshers and new students unaware of the darker side of student life, many simply forget to take out student policies.
A spokeswoman for LSE student union admitted that it is essential students and in particular freshers insure their rooms, with possessions such as iPods, laptops, computers and mobile phones totaling over £2,000 – with burglaries for these expensive products on the increase.
