Lectures and classes take place in eighteen of the buildings on campus, in over 600 teaching rooms, including classrooms, lecture rooms and theatres, computer workstation rooms, specialist skills and clinical skills laboratories, workshops, and studios for art, design and the performing arts. You will be taught in rooms that are well equipped with seating, white board, overhead projector and slide facilities. Several lecture theatres have facilities for TV, video and computer presentations. National and international video-conferencing is also possible from these TVI theatres. The Library Learning and Resource Service (LLRS) is a modern, purpose built four-storey building. Library facilities are also provided off-campus at our Clinical Nursing sites. Overall the University provides 8750 square metres of library space. There are 455,000 books, 4700 journals and a collection of information on compact disk. A networked service allows access to millions of books and journals worldwide, and major overseas newspapers are available. The library houses the largest computer access area in the University, with approximately 240 networked terminals. Computer terminal rooms are also available in several buildings across the campus, giving a total of over 1000 terminals for student use. Students have their own free internet access, email address and personal area on the Universitys computer network. The LLRS is open seven days a week, and from 8.30 am to 11.00 pm on weekdays during term-time. A brand new Library Learning and Resource Service opened in 2001 at the Cumbria Campus. On campus the halls are modern, spacious and very popular with international students. Study bedrooms all have telephones and access to the internet. Secure and comfortable, the rooms are either clustered into flats of 47 bedrooms, or along corridors sharing bathrooms and kitchens. Some are specially adapted for students with disabilities, and it is possible to opt for single-gender flats if you wish. We help students to find accomodation either in the halls or from the Universitys register of approved private accommodation close to the campus. You should submit your request as early as posssible to avoid disappointment. Students making us first choice on their UCAS form will have accommodation allocated when they accept our offer, as will those coming through partnership arrangements. All accommodation is self-catering and the kitchens in the halls are suitable for preparing light meals and snacks. Most of the ingredients you will need are available locally, such as fresh meat, vegetables and fruit, rice, pasta and spices. There are two large refectories and several coffee bars on campus providing a range of hot and cold food - from sandwiches and snacks to main meals. Many of the dishes suit international tastes and vegetarian options are always available. You will find the UK diet surprisingly cosmopolitan. Close to campus there are a large number of commercially owned outlets serving food, such as takeaways, pubs, cafes, bars and restaurants. |
