 Birmingham, Britain's second city is a major industrial conurbation surrounded by quintessentially English countryside. Birmingham is also a cultural centre; the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Ballet are based in the city.

Birmingham was also one of the focal points of England's canal network, and in recent years the revitalisation of the inland waterways for leisure has led to the opening of many excellent bars and restaurants around the evocatively named Gas Street Basin.
