Network releases Eric Chappell’s Only When I Laugh 4 disc box set, all four series plus the 1981 Christmas special on 15th September 2008.

This classic TV sitcom follows the escapades of James Bolam (Beiderbecke, The Likely Lads), Peter Bowles (The Bounder) and Christopher Strauli (Raffles) as three hypochondriac patients in an NHS hospital. Richard Wilson plays the long-suffering and droll Dr. Thorpe. The depiction of the well-meaning but flustering orderly ward Gupte (Derrick Branche), led to accusations of racism in some quarters.

Only When I Laugh was yet another ratings success for ITV, at one point topping 17 million viewers, more than Coronation Street. It is the creation of Eric Chappell (Rising Damp, The Squirrels).

The box set contains all 4 series in their entirety, as well as the Christmas special episode, originally transmitted on 24th December 1981 when a new patient is admitted and everyone has to exercise the festive spirit.
